Three businessmen were arrested in Mullathive by Mulathive Police Special Task Force on 20th for allegedly trying to sell an ancient Buddhist fully gold 34cm tall statue for about Rs. 500 million.
The Buddha statue was 8kg and it was also taken into police special task force custody.
The police have already informed the archaeological department to find out the actual value and the ancient value of this Buddha statue.
According to police, these suspects are from Hatton and Dehiwala. The Buddha statue was advertised on Facebook for sale and Mulathive Special Task Force Constable Mr Herath (32504) has informed this to his senior police officers.
Thereafter, according to the advice of senior police officers, Mr Herath acted as a businessman and contacted the seller.
The seller has agreed to sell the Buddha statue for RS. 500 million to Mr Herath and accordingly, the seller and two other people had arrived in Mulathive by a vehicle with the Buddha statue.
As per the instruction of Police Special Task Force, DIG Waruna Jayasundara, three suspects were captured along with the Buddha statue and the vehicle.
Further investigation is going on to find where did they find this ancient Buddha statue.
